I can't even describe how much I love this 2.5D approach to art!!! <3 I personally like to plan out the backgrounds for my art in 3D and paint over them.

Yeah I could see that approach being used a lot, especially in comics or animation where you'd have to keep track of a whole environment with multiple camera shots.

Really comes in handy and looks even more amazing when you blend it with 2d to make a whole new look!
